Tsaousakis was born in Istanbul in 1919; his surname was Moutafoglou, but he was given the name Tsaousakis during his army service. His parents came to Greece after the Asia Minor disaster and settled in Thessaloniki. His father died while he was still a child.
Before he met Tsitsanis and began singing, Tsaousakis worked on the docks and generally struggled. The first song he recorded as «Sit and listen to a chord» in 1949. He sang almost 70 songs by Vasilis Tsitsanis in their first release. He also sang songs by others such as Peristeris, Papaioannou, Kaldaras, Chrysinis, Derveniotis, Klouvatos, Persas, Bakalis, Zambetas? first song in 1953, Mouflouzelis, Akis Panou, Bournelis, Efstathiou adn others. His singing was spare and simple, as Vamvakaris? had been before him and Bithikotsis afterwards. That was considered the masculine way to sing, passion was for women. Men sang staccato and didn?t allow their voices to drag out.
He died of a heart attack at the age of 60. His last appearance in a recording studio was in 1976, three years before his death and 30 years after his first recording.
