Sotiria Bellou (1921 1997) singer
Sotiria Bellou was born in Halkida in 1921 and left for Athens before the war, in 1940, facing many of the difficulties that threaten young girls living alone at that time in the bit city. Her wealthy family lost all trace of her. Seven years later, she was found singing with Vasilis Tsitsanis at Fat Jimmy s night club in Acharnes. Duing the occupation, however, Bellou was not only struggling to survive but against the German occupiers and their local collaborators. She joined the National Liberation Front (EAM) and was often in danger. The Germans caught her, tortured and imprisoned her. In the civil war she was arrested again and once again thrown in prison.
During her long and eventful history in the Greek singing industry, Bellou had many hits written by the most famous songwriters. «Cloudy Sunday», «Kavourakia», «When you drink in the taverna» «Be a bit patient» (by Tsitsanis), «Go back to your first life», «Be brave my heart» (Papaioannou), «The Sailor», «The darkened light» (Mitsakis) «I want to write off the past» (Kaldaras) and «Open, open» (Papaioannou). From 1941 to 1976 she sang songs by nearly all the popular songwriters. From then until just a few years ago, she once again made her name with pioneering ventures into art music and modern songwriters in general. At the same time, she also recorded new versions of old popular and rebetiko songs which became popular by the younger generation and enabled her to keep appearing at nightclubs, the boites in Plaka and other cultural events.
Bellou was authentic and honest as an artist and helped many of her younger colleagues get started in their singing careers. She was loved by those in the world of popular music but also had other admirers. Apart from her unquestioned value as an artist, everyone acknowledged her straightforward character.
