Edito de A Whisper of the EyeGlissando started life 4 or 5 years ago as a duo of Rich and Elly May. A home produced 3 track CD was designed and released through Rich's newly formed Gizeh label. A two week UK tour with label mates 30 Day Hex followed.
The next two years were pretty crazy to say the least - line-up changes galore saw not a single show performed with the same line-up for those two years - sporadic improv shows ensued and drew everything to a point of no return. Rich and Elly May remained throughout.
Work began on the debut album and is still moving.
A live recording of 'What the Exultant Heart Calls Good' emerged from a rehearsal which has been released as a limited edition of 50 copies on Gizeh?s CD-r offshoot Loom Recordings - beautifully hand crafted and numbered by Glissando.
Glissando?s own Cloud Blunt Moon studio is currently being relocated and when finished the writing process will be furthered. A more mature sound is slowly filtering out drawing on a vast array of influences. Comparisons could be made to Low, This Mortal Coil or a more stripped down Dead Can Dance.
Shows are planned for the back-end of 2006 and hopefully a 7" single on Gizeh before finishing work on the album. Selected press: TASTY ?I must say this is quite lovely in a ?sit back with a syringe full? kind of way. Dreamy, almost Celtic vocals, remind this listener of Slowdive, but I doubt that?s where Glissando get their kicks. There?s also touches of ?Faith?-era Cure or early New Order here, which you don?t hear a lot of these days. Most nice. ORIGINAL SIN ?The kind folks at Gizeh Records are taking us into a kind of dream with the release by Glissando, who consist of Richard (Instruments - he also recorded and mixed this MCD) and Elly May (Voice and guitars). Both love to take us into a bit of a trance as you completely fall into the atmospheric and at times even ethereal sounds, with Elly's voice taking almost the part of an instrument on its own and together with the guitar playing and atmospheric sounds everything is kind of a unit!. Listening to 'Grekken' or 'No escape' I can't help to be a bit in a Slowdive mood or even think of certain things done by This Mortal Coil or other atmospheric 4AD pieces. RAW NERVE ?The packaging on this CD is awesome, purely arty, but very stylish as well. The prospect of writing a review for a one track CD is a bit weird, but then within the first minute of wonderful ambience I hear Bill Hicks' sampled voice, and all becomes well. There is some excellent feedbacky style drones, reverb drenched noises and voices, and floating sounds washing over everything, and then the introduction of a very quiet guitar sound and delicate feminine vocals start to piece some kind of structure to the track. Already I am thinking Mogwai, Third Eye Foundation, Godspeed You Black Emperor with the addition of The Cranes, Radiohead (especially later on, certainly reminds me of "Everything in its place"), Mercury Rev, Ani DiFranco, Mazzy Star and possibly Spiritualized in the vocal sound and delivery style. This is very dramatic, alive sounding ambient music and when the vocals drop out momentarily at the four minute mark, and some more drama is introduced into the equation in the slightly out of key drones, there is a massive sense that something big is going to transpire here.
And so the song builds, delayed echoing build ups, and more pressure on the plucking of the strings, with more swirling sounds coming in and out keep it quite tense, but also very nice sounding and beautiful. I almost cannot take the tension as I just want the song to do whatever it has to and take me with it, but in GYBE style, the song really goes for it on the build up, but still manages to remain absolutely stunning. The vocals are so beautiful, captivating, and completely off kilter with the almost disturbing noises that are brewing and slashing underneath. This is one oddball, but excellent ambient vocal track, with plenty of weird twists and swirls, and most definitely needs those lava lamps warmed up before pressing play for it.
