Edito de A Little Rebel (Ena mikro kleftopoulo)ita Abatzi (1914 - 1969)
Born in 1914 in Smyrna, she came to Greece after the Asia Minoir catastrophe at the age of eight. Her family settled in Kokkinia. She sang rebetiko, Smyrna songs and folk songs, featuring on 78 rpm recordings between 1930 and 1940. She worked with great songwriters such as Panayiotis Toundas, Vangelis Papazoglou, Costas Skarvelis, Iakovos Montanaris, Spyros Peristeris, Dimitris Semsis, Yiannis Ogdontakis.
Her singing career began in about 1930 and made her first recordings in 1931. During that decade she sang with Smyrna ensembles at nightclubs. Among other things she was one of the greatest interpreters of folk songs in the 20th century. She sang with Papasideris, Roukounas and Myttakis. After the war she made no more 78 rpm recordings. Abatzi was the sister of Sofia Karivali (Abatzi) also a singer, who worked with Markos Vamvakaris.
