Edito de Walking Thru Fire EPNine:Fifteen (a duo consisting of DJ/Producer Blake9 and MC Comel_15 of Time Machine) is back with their third release on Candlewax Records. Just following their feature on the Art For Art s Sake twelve inch record with Count Bass D, these two are continuing the buzz. Walking Thru Fire, is yet another undeniably raw hip hop single from the label quickly establishing itself amongst the indie-elite. This three-track single sees Blake9 laying down some gritty bangers from his SP1200 and Comel_15 combining clever wordplay with unique song structures while applying salt-n-vinegar flows to the mix.
If you happened to pick up either of Nine:Fifteen s previous twelve-inch singles Spilt Milk and Deluxe Laminated, or were lucky enough to get your hands on seven-inch rarity Say What, then you know what the time is. While receiving accolades in XLR8R (USA), Stealth Magazine (AUS), Under Cover (UK) and many other webzines Nine:Fifteen continues to make valuable hip hop and a name for themselves. XLR8R May 2005 proved that Deluxe Laminated, comes strong with three tracks firmly rooted in that classic boom bap. While Stealth Magazine (AUS) maintained that this record was on some, crunchy indie stuff with more honesty than a Universal Records executive s excuse to his wife.
On Walking Thru Fire Nine:Fifteen recruits long time art director, music collaborator, and friend Radel Esca s singing talent on Keep Trying, and brings raw energy combined with a hypnotizing melodic flute loop. On the second track Comel joins up with friend and Glow In The Dark label-mate Shawn Jackson on The One I Always Cry For. The two lace rugged swinging flows over a whaling guitar and a grinding organ beat. The Final track RIP finds Comel reflecting on the obvious, but is it, really Unique song structure and mysterious flow help this guitar-riff laden beat to complete the third twelve-inch by Nine:Fifteen.
Blake9 has released three successful 7-inch collaborations with Time Machine crew members Jaysonic, Comel, and Stoerok, all on Candlewax Records previous incarnation, Irish CarBomb Music (ICB). Candlewax has continued the ICB legacy by releasing the Art For Art s Sake 12-inch by Blake9 and Count Bass D. Featuring the track Gamble by Nine:Fifteen which was a definitive highlight from the Art For Art s Sake project. Nine:Fifteen s Spilt Milk and Deluxe Laminated are two other classic twelve inches that have received much praise. The label has also sprinkled hip hop in the form of a full length CD featuring Mad Squirrel from Bay area super group Forrest Fires Collective and a seven inch from Bay area production duo Olive Green of Vinyl Monkeys fame. In 2007 Candlewax Records will persist in broadening hip hop horizons with their releases.
