So with that in mind, it doesn't make a lot of sense to release a 28 minute long song as your next album. So guess what we did... "This Faustian Flesh" is a 28 minute long song broken down into 7 movements/tracks. It's lyrics deal with a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for apathy and knowledge. Sounds like party material, doesn't it? It all started out as a very literal adaptaion of Christopher Marlowe?s Doctor Faustus, but as time went on, we made it a bit more modern and more personal, until we eventually ended up with what we have here. At the music end of things, while writing I was mainly listening to Jeff Buckley?s "Grace" and Satyricon?s "Shadowthrone". Then once we started recording, I decided I wanted to get a bit of that layered Porcupine Tree sound and mix that with some of the harsher black metal tones. I really intended this to be a bridge between my more primitive musical instincts and the more structured, progressive side. That being said, I suppose I should mention that those who believe in "genre purity" or similar concepts will probably hate us.
