Edito de The Space Between BeginningsThe space between beginnings is the zone of uncertainty which exists while living from an end into an beginning. it is a very odd place to be. interesting enough, while recording and living in this ?space?, many friends and acquaintances were also moving through this period that we inevitably experience at least once in life. this recording documents this phase. it is important to remember that what we bring away from this reflective period is very dependent upon what we take into it... j a s o n s l o a n - baltimore, md. 9:50pm, 8.26.01 j a s o n s l o a n: keyboards, electronics, sound processing, guitar, e.bow, samples, loops, field recordings, voices, acoustic treatments and silent atmospheres. - - - - - - - - - - - I initially heard Jason?s ?Space Between Beginnings? not too long after he had finished putting the finishing touches on it. I?d been familiar with Jason?s music for almost a year, from his profoundly sonorous The Shoreline of an End, through his Whispered With Water, and to his newest release The Space Between Beginnings. Jason had asked me to give some preliminary feedback on this recording. What I ended up writing was my most poetic review to date. Review: Dreamy consonance and obscure tonal washes lull the listener and freeze time, as Jason Sloan unfolds ?The Space Between Beginnings.? ?A Prayer for Moments away? begins the descent into ?The Space?? with it?s lush synth pad chordings and it?s melismatic, almost angelic vocal invitations beckoning the listener to come further forward, trusting, and believing without apprehension in the all-encompassing optimism of a surreal and ethereal netherworld. ?The Bridge to Solitude? is a long and harrowing walk, but the singing of the invisible nymphs below comforts the reluctant anticipation and past-experience away. The yearning for what is ?home? and what is familiar moves further from our thoughts and we are swept slowly and painlessly to ?The Still of After.? The dream-state, ?After?, wholly encompasses our being and our newfound freedom allows us to float freely about the ether in a blissful state that is without weight and without effort. ?After? becomes a revolving door of memories and contemplative acceptance. The time, now, becomes the only thing that is of any real concern as we languidly hang close to the fringe of the ?Limbus? state. An inevitable sojourn is upon us, once an abstract concept, an indefinite point in some being?s sequence of events, ?The Space Between Beginnings? is charted, no longer indefinite and no longer abstract. postscript: Jason has created his finest work to date with Beginnings. Compositionally he?s moved in leaps and bounds over the last year,prolifically creating works as profound as any of his contemporaries, if not more so. With Beginnings, Jason has crafted an exceptional sonic tapestry that demonstrates his gifted compositional and conceptual abilities once more. With the four tracks that comprise The Space Between Beginnings, Jason has masterfully assembled a transcendental and lush recording that truly embodies the most basic precepts of a beautiful and sonically significant Ambient music. I give Jason?s work the highest praise and accolades, and I hope that he continues on this path.
