Cynics carp that it's due to the general dearth of original talent in NYC's famously jaded underground rock scene, a faux-subterranean landscape populated by pretenders, Strokes wannabees and other MTV trend chasers. Perhaps they have a point... But the people who religiously hold up the PSK banner -- the sharp, brightly-colored humans who come to all the shows, wear the teeshirts and play PSK's CDs on infinite repeat at home in their bedrooms -- are not cynics. They are real music lovers who are drawn to PSK because of the band's total commitment to playing the most uncompromised, unapologetically buoyant, sing-along rock and roll possible. For them, the attraction to PSK is undeniable -- even addictive. Maybe PSK IS the best band in New York. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the band create flawless pop songs. Taking cues from a huge palette of sources like The Cure, Prince, Daft Punk, Jane's Addiction, Motorhead, Jellyfish and an endless list of spiritual forbears, PSK's music is a remarkably concise distillation of their influences, filtered through a hyper-stylized sensibility so fresh and unique that it can only be regarded as its own voice altogether. Take PSKs reverential and unapologetic tribute shows where they covered Madonna's debut record from beginning to end. Be advised -- this was no "too-cool," tongue-in-cheek treatment. These were full-on worship sessions of the mighty Material One. PSK are simpatico with Madonna's take-no-prisoners, push-every-limit method of making music, which was obvious in the amount of heart and care they put into these performances. LIVE PSK cram as many as 15 songs into their breathless, 40-minute sets, surgical strikes of sheer sonic mischief delivered with jaw-dropping execution, daredevil spirit and a general fuck-all attitude. Fist-in-the-air electro-pop at its best bolstered by a fiercely muscular rhythm section and topped with stun guitars, analog synth candy, and massive, unforgettable vocal harmonies. In the audience, fans swoon while musicians take notes. RECORDED The immaculately disposable lo-fi electropop of the debut ("This Is pOp*stAr*kiDs") won the hearts of thousands of college radio kids, who put the unknown band in CMJ's National Top 200 chart for over two months in 2000, and managed to find a place in an episode of MTV's Daria. The more accomplished sophomore effort ("The Rise and Fall of pOp*stAr*kiDs") produced beloved concert staples like "Special Thing," "Let's Get Ready" and "You're the $" and was ubiquitous on dozens of TV shows and movie soundtracks in 2001. All of which poised the band to make its most powerful and militantly individualistic statement to date, 2003's ferocious "The Revenge of pOp*stAr*kiDs." Fortifying the clean electropop sheen and whimsy of earlier PSK outings with an unmistakable edge and even some affecting detours into darkness, this record stands as a high water mark -- and 35 minutes of the most vital rock and roll you'll hear all year.
