Edito de PARADOX - surrealistic imagesIn the early 1960?s the Moog ? Synthesizer achieved a degree of popularity largely due to a couple of acclaimed recordings by W. Carlos. ?Switched On Bach? and ?The Well Tempered Synthesizer? left an indelible impression on all who listened.
It was evident that this new musical instrument had great potential as a medium for classical music with its great capacity to produce surrealistic and ethereal sounds in a multitrack recording environment as the Carlos recordings proved without a doubt.
However early synthesizers had some limitations. Being monophonic, their fantastic capabilities could not be fully realized in live performances. Rock groups who could afford them readily adopted synthesizers. Some advances were made in polyphony but the instruments were still of limited scope.
Then came some further development. The FM (frequency modulation) synths represented a fundamental departure from the analog Moog tone production concept. The sound was often ?thinner? and many instruments had ?presets? that were designed to imitate other instruments. Next came the ?digital sampler? synths that used recorded sound samples as tone sources.
This recording utilizes both FM and digital synths with the object of producing surrealistic analog synthesizer tonal quality, which allows the instruments to be unique, and not merely an imitation of something else.
This recording was a pleasure to make. Although challenging technically, it was made with a light heart and a sense of humor, which I hope, is evident in the music.
