---------------------------
An amazing journey and story that began in 1994 when Randy Brecker met Wlodek Pawlik in Germany when the well-known, award winning Polish pianist played with the Western Jazz Quartet.
This meeting would make sense 11 or so years later, when Randy's brother, Michael, was diagnosed with leukemia. Randy, along with his family immediately began looking for eastern Euro donors; family or relatives were believed to be the best match. Making contact with Wlodek, they traced Brecker's relatives to an area in Poland: Tykocin (his mother's maiden name [and still the name of the Rabbi in the local ancient synagogue] was Tecosky). In honour of this discovery, Wlodek wrote the Tykocin Jazz Suite ? the musical story of Randy?s ?Nostalgic Journey? and homecoming.
"This music is a great affirmation of life,? notes Randy.
-------------------
alleluia
Sing to Yahweh a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the saints.
-David?s Psalm 149
Praise him for his mighty acts.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet
Praise him with the harp and lyre!
-David?s Psalm 150
I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.
-David?s Psalm 146
Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up.
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways. (?)
This knowledge is beyond me.
It?s lofty.
I can?t attain it.
Where could I go from your Spirit
Or where could I flee from your presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, you are there.
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there!
If I say: ?Surely the darkness with overwhelm me;
even the darkness doesn?t hide from you,
Your eyes saw my body.
In your book they were all written,
the days that were ordained for me,
when as yet there were none of them.
-David?s Psalm 139
----
?words from the composer ?
Could I in my own words express the inexpressible context of this musical meeting?
Are all these thoughts, quoted from aforementioned David?s Psalms, adequate?
In my deep conviction ?Nostalgic Journey: Tycoin Jazz Suite? is one of the stops in the human?s pilgrimage ? the place of relaxation?and reflection of ourselves and the world.
?I will sing praises to God as long as I exist??
- Wlodek Pawlik
----------------------------
"Mr Pawlik can be equally described as the Vladimir Horowitz of jazz or the Oscar Peterson of classical music. In other words: he is completely his own man and everybody should hear him play."
-Who's Who at the North Sea Jazz Festival
Wlodek Pawlik (b. 1958) graduated from the Musical Academy in Warsaw and from Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Hamburg, where he received his classical piano training under the direction of Barbara Hesse-Bukowska in 1984. -----------------------------
Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound of music for decades. His performances have graced hundreds of albums by an incredibly wide range of artists. His history is as varied as it is distinguished. Born in Philadelphia (1945) to a piano-playing father, and a mother with the maiden name of Tecosky (the journey of this recording), Randy spent summers in stage-band camps where he got his earliest experience in ensemble playing. He began playing R&B and funk in local bar bands while in his teens.
?60s?
In 1966, he moved to New York City where some of his first gigs were with infamous big bands. Randy also began his foray into jazz-rock by joining Blood, Sweat and Tears. In 1968, he recorded his first album as a leader, ?Score?, which also featured 19 year-old brother, Michael, on saxophone.
?70s?
After Horace Silver, Randy joined forces with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before teaming up with brother Michael, Barry Rogers, Billy Cobham, and John Abercrombie to form the seminal fusion group Dreams for two adventurous and wildly-acclaimed albums. In 1972 Randy was back with Horace Silver, teaming up with brother Michael as the front line in Horace's quintet. By now, the brothers had become two of the most in-demand studio musicians of the day. (They would become a band of immeasurable influence and impact.)
?80s?
After the Brecker Brothers parted in 1982, Randy recorded and toured extensively with Jaco Pastorius, recording the famous ?Word of Mouth? album. In 1986, Randy produced, composed and arranged his first acoustic jazz album. Through the end of the ?80s Randy toured several times as a leader. In 1989 under the auspices of the US State Department, he toured Eastern Europe before the fall of Communism. In that same year, he performed a sold out week at the Albert Hall In London with Eric Clapton.
?90s?
In 1992, exactly ten years after they disbanded, Randy and Michael joined forces again in a much-heralded reunion featuring a world tour and the triple-Grammy nominated recording, ?The Return of the Brecker Brothers? only to follow it up in the Fall of 1994 with the double-Grammy winning ?Out of the Loop.? During this period, Randy began recording his first solo album in six years, ?Into the Sun,? which won him his first Grammy as a soloist in 1998.
?00s
Randy?s first two solo releases of the decade were welcome to great reviews. The powerful ?Some Skunk Funk? with brother Michael and the WDR Big Band was released in 2005 and was the recipient of two Grammy Awards. His ?Randy in Brasil? (MAMA Records) was released in 2008 and was recognized with the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Randy Brecker continues to influence and inspire young musicians, and throughout the years, has been in constant demand as a clinician, performing at colleges and universities the world over.
