Interchangeably called jubilee, minstrel, religious, slave or folk songs, spirituals covered a diverse span of religious and secular subjects. These Negro religious songs contained a lyrical quality and dealt with a variety of emotions, such as joy, happiness, and sorrow. The songs were termed spirituals because of the relationship between the type of song and the ?Holy Spirit.?
