Four guys who have been around. The Woodsmen, the Dry Spells, the Mullets, All part of the pedigree. Fenders, Gibsons, Marshalls and Martins, Zildjians, Radio Kings, and hickory sticks. Six packs and smokes. All buzz, burn, whine, thump and pop. Same sounds with a whole new story. Songs about living, working, drinking and loving. Right or wrong, good or bad, Better fast than sorry. Sometimes sounds like Creedence or Hank. Sometimes the Stones, Crazy Horse, or VU. Maybe the Replacements or Meat Puppets. Straight up, rock and roll. The lineup is solid. Bill's twang, Jerry's snarl, Greg's thunder, Jason's bang. Twisted, hard, spontaneous and loose. Genuine. This is the real deal, the good stuff. Melodies stick, guitar solos sting, the bass holds fast and the drums shake. This is Gleasons Drift. Nothing wrong with that at all. Throw in some punky pop as well, and things look really promising, along the lines of a band like the Old 97s. 'Regina' even has a hint of the Replacements (there can be no higher praise), except that Gleason's Drift are better musicians!" Gleasons Drift believe in the three Bs: Bob Seger, Budweiser and the eternal Buzz. As a result, Beaver has a slightly boozified view of the world that tilts everything it sees -- love, money, '73 Chevys -- slightly to left of center. Though Gleasons Drift aren't as fantastically wasted as The Replacements or Guided by Voices, honest blue-collar laments like "Personally (Don't Take It)" and "Been a Drag" will appeal to fans of those groups, so honest are they in their depiction of four regular dudes drinking six-packs and playing songs in each other's basements. The recording here is rudimentary at best, but the band's sloppy method behind a mixing desk actually helps emphasize the gritty, freewheeling nature of their songwriting. You can practically see Westerberg and Pollard buzzed out in the Snake Pit, downing Old Style tall boys and flipping bingos, listening to the shambolic furor of "Black Cloud Shadow" or "Regina". A pleasantly straightforward outfit in an era of ironic poseurs and new-wave wannabes, Gleasons Drift make no bones about being nobodies -- but in a rare twist of fate, Beaver's slovenly pop lurch could soon make them a gaggle of somebodies."
