Edito de All We Need? After many conversations with my teacher Jimmy Heath, I?ve been thinking about how to write beautiful melodies. I wanted to reach my heroes like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Hodges, Kirk Whalum, and Grover Washington Jr. For me, these musicians found a way to express their brilliant artistry, and move people at the same time. After listening to many recent recordings I?ve tried to listen as a non-musician, to see if I get the message. In most cases I am truly impressed with the musicianship, but I still long for that welcome. After teaching Jazz history at Queens College my feeling about music has changed. I began to really pay attention to the sound of the musicians, the way they play melodies, the uses of space, and mainly the groove. The musician who changed my life the most was Louis Armstrong. Every note he played had it?s own character, and he grooved so hard. He never got too far from the melody, and his technique is still a challenge for trumpet players today.
This project is not about multiple meters, harmony and technique; it is about communication. It?s about love for life, family, friends, and devotion to God. I wanted to get back to expressing beauty with the melodies, my sound, and dynamics. I picked these musicians because when I played with them or listened to their music I felt what I was looking for. I?m so thankful to them for adding positive spirit to the project.? ~ Antonio Hart
