Edito de A Shout In The StreetAn unique project featuring members of some of the most popular bands in the Northwest, "A Shout In The Street" is the product of two creative minds working under unusual circumstances. Named after a line from James Joyce's novel, "Ulysses," the album reflects quite an original musical sensibility, incorporating electronic dance elements into an acoustic rock format. As with the music of artists such as Moby, Sting, David Gray and Damien Rice, Guernica Gazebo create intelligent songs, utilizing the technology of the 21st Century, in a rich, organic setting. Recorded at various studios in Oregon and California over the course of the past two decades, the eleven songs presented on "A Shout In The Street" were originally released by singer/songwriter Lew Jones on numerous separate solo albums. Fulfilling a longtime promise, producer DJ S Curve remixed the original tracks, adding rhythms from various electronic sources, as well as a complement of keyboard sounds- synthesizing in the process, an entirely new musical framework for the songs. Bassist John Wager (Willies, Pink Martini), drummer Dennis Elmer (Henry Moon, Brothers of the Baladi), keyboardist SP Clarke (Ed & the Boats, Jesus Presley) and conga player Mara Banks (Boka Marimba), in addition to a host of other talented performers, contributed to the original tracks. Rick McMillen mastered the remixed album at Superdigital. "A Shout In The Street" combines masterful songwriting with exemplary musicianship and sterling production to elicit an array of musical colors- from the wistfully haunting acoustic ambiance of "Beauty" to the ethereal majesty of "Northern Lights" (inspired by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins), to harder edged numbers such as "Destiny Forever" and "Europe," to the dance/electronica remix of the oldest recording of the lot, "Eastcoast/Westcoast Connection" (originally recorded in 1984). The album proves to be a cohesive compendium, thematically consistent, while remaining at all times artistically eclectic.
