1. Vous venez de sortir un nouvel album intitulé « 24 heures » et vous déclarez
que c’est l’album le plus personnel de votre carrière. Est-ce que vous
pouvez nous en dire plus ?
1. Well this “24 hour” the new CD, I co-wrote most of the songs on there.So it’s a
lot to do with me. And it came about, mmm, when I was talking to Bono and the
Edge, in Dublin, in Ireland. We were having a drink of champagne and talking. And
I asked Bono: could he write me a song and he said he would love to. But if he did
he would like to write the song about me, you know, things that had happened to
me. And he told me that when he was a kid , he remembers me coming on
television and he always liked the shirts and the shoes. And so, that’s why this line
is in there, you know, “I’ve got the shirts, I’ve got the shoes”. And then about what
jobs I had before I got into the show business. And I said I used to work in
construction, you know, doing everything, even digging ditches sometimes. So
there’s another line in the song “ you’ve got to get your hands dirty when you’re
digging in a ditch’, you know. So those things, the information I gave him he wrote(
it )down. So then I thought if he could write the song from the information I gave
him maybe I could do the same thing with other writers. So that’s what I did and
thank God it turned out really, really good.
1. Et bien pour ce nouvel album « 24 heures », j’ai coécrit la plupart des
chansons, donc ces titres me concernent directement.
J’ai eu cette idée en en parlant avec Bono et the Edge, nous étions à Dublin. Nous
buvions du champagne et nous discutions… je lui ai demandé : « Est-ce que tu
pourrais m’écrire une chanson ? » et il m’a répondu qu’il aimerait bien, mais qu’il
souhaiterait encore plus écrire une chanson qui parle de moi, et des choses qui
me sont arrivées. Il me disait qu’il se souvenait que, quand il était enfant, il me
voyait à la télévision, et qu’il aimait bien les chemises, ainsi que les chaussures
que je portais. C’est pour cela qu’il y a cette phrase dans l’album « I’ve got the
shirt, I’ve got the shoes » : je porte la chemise, j’ai les chaussures… ensuite il m’a
demandé quelle sorte de travail je faisais avant d’entrer dans le show business. Je
lui ai expliqué que je travaillais dans la construction : je faisais tout, même creuser
des tranchées parfois... C’est ainsi qu’il y a une autre phrase dans la chanson
« you’ve got to get your hands dirty when you’re digging in a ditch » : tu dois te
salir les mains quand tu creuses des tranchées.
Alors il a écrit ces textes à partir des informations que je lui ai données. Et puis je
me suis dit : s’il peut écrire une chanson d’après ce que j’ai pu lui dire, peut-être
que je peux faire la même chose avec d’autres compositeurs… Et c’est ce que j’ai
fait.
Grâce à Dieu, cela sonne vraiment très bien.
2. Pourquoi avez-vous attendu si longtemps avant d’écrire vos chansons?
2. Well , the reason that I did write most of this stuff was out of necessity.
Because in the past I’ve always waited for the songs to come to me. And if I liked
them I would record them and if I didn’t they wouldn’t. So we started off like that
with, because I signed with an independent label in the States called “S-curve” and
they brought songs to me that have already been recorded. So the only one I really
liked was the Bruce Springsteen, song “ the Hitter’ so we kept that one on the
album. But the other ones I wasn’t too keen about so I said “ look I need some
new stuff, I need some new material” and then they started getting new material
but there wasn’t anything exciting there. I didn’t feel excited with any of the songs I
was being presented with. So it forced me into writing, myself. So maybe it was a
blessing in disguise because it got me to do things I’ve never done before, working
with songwriters from the ground up. So it was different.
2. J’ai écrit la majeure partie de ce disque par besoin. En effet, dans le passé, j’ai
toujours attendu que les chansons viennent à moi, et si elles me plaisaient je les
enregistrais.
Alors on a commencé comme cela parce que j’avais un contrat avec une maison
de disque indépendante aux Etats-Unis, appelé « S-curve », qui me proposait des
maquettes déjà enregistrées. Mais la seule qui me plaisait était le titre de Bruce
Springsteen, « The Hitter ». Alors on l’a conservée sur l’album. Mais les autres ne
me disaient vraiment pas. Je leur ai dit : « Ecoutez, j’ai besoin de quelque chose de
nouveau ». Alors ils m’ont apporté de nouveaux titres, mais rien de très excitant.
Les chansons qu’on me présentait ne me plaisaient pas… C’est ce qui m’a forcé à
écrire par moi-même. C’était peut-être un mal pour un bien parce que j’ai du faire
des choses que je n’avais jamais faites avant, travailler avec des compositeurs du
début jusqu’a la fin. Ce fut donc très différent.
3. Alors quelle est la signification du titre de cet album : « 24 heures » ?
3. Err.. the reason that we called the album 24 hrs is because 24 hrs is
continuous. After 24 hrs there’s another 24 hrs and then another 24 hrs and
hopefully another 24 hrs. So that’s the reason why. Er.. it’s not only named after
the title of one of the songs that’s on there. It’s the album in general that keeps
going, hopefully that’s keeps going 24hrs after 24 hrs. So we thought it was a
good idea.
3. La raison pour laquelle nous avons intitulé cet album « 24 heures », c’est parce
que 24 heures c’est la continuité. Après 24 heures, il y a un cycle de 24 heures,
et puis espérons le, encore d’autres cycles de 24 heures. Il n’a pas été choisi
uniquement en raison du titre d’une des chansons. C’est l’album en général qui est
une continuité et en espérant qu’il continuera encore et encore. Alors nous avons
pensé que c’était une bonne idée pour un titre…
4. A propos, à quoi cela ressemble « 24 heures » de la vie de Tom Jones?
4. Why well, it all depends(on ) what I’m doing. At the moment I’m promoting the
CD, so they are long days from in the morning, err, not too early though. But 11
O’Clock to , hmmm, sometimes 8 to 9 or 10 sometimes later. With the TV then it
goes even later than that so it’s a full day. It’s a 12 hour day. So that’s when I’m
promoting. But that’s the longest day for me because there’s so much to do. But
when I’m doing live shows I concentrate on the 90mn or 2hours sometimes of
songs that I’m doing in the show. So that’s another, it’s easier in the daytime
when you’re doing show at night. Because I don’t do that much in the day then
,except going to the gym, make sure that I’m feeling good for the show at night.
So it’s all geared to this show at night. And then when I’m not working, when I’m
off, which is very rare, and that’s the way I like it though!. I don’t like to take long
periods of time off and I live in los Angeles, California. So I’m up, in the pool. I can
relax easily or get in the car and drive around, errr. It’s very relaxing to live in Los
Angeles and the weather is normally very good, so that’s another kind of day that I
have. It all depends what I have to do. But I enjoy the whole thing. I don’t have any
problems with thinking” Oh my God, I have to go do that!” that doesn’t enter my
mind, you know. There’s always a reason for it. And that’s to get the CD out there
so everybody knows that it’s there, most people anyway. And then it’s an
opportunity to do new things on stage, you know, like put 5 songs, the new ones
of the album into my show ,already. And it’s working really well. So as time goes
on now I”ll put more in. So hopefully we can get the all Cd on stage so , yeah…
4. Et bien, cela dépend de ce que je fais. En ce moment je fais la promotion de
l’album, alors je fais des longues journées.
Le matin, pas trop tôt quand même, à partir de 11 heures par exemple, je
commence et ce jusqu’à 20h, 21h, ou 22 heures ou plus tard… Avec la télévision
cela peut même aller plus tard que cela, alors c’est une très longue journée…
C’est une journée de 12 heures. Ca c’est lorsque je fais la promotion d’un album.
Et ce sont les journées les plus longues pour moi parce qu’il y a tant à faire. Mais
quand je fais mes spectacles live, je me concentre sur les 90 minutes, ou parfois
les 2 heures de chansons que j’interprète dans mon spectacle… C’est autre
chose.
C’est une journée plus facile quand vous faites le spectacle le soir, parce que
pendant la journée je ne fais pas grand chose, si ce n’est me rendre à la gym pour
me sentir bien pour le spectacle du soir. Tout est conditionné pour le spectacle du
soir. Et puis quand je ne travaille pas, ce qui est très rare, et c’est un choix car je
n’aime pas prendre de longues périodes sans travail, je vis à Los Angeles en
Californie.
Alors là, je me lève, je vais dans la piscine, je peux me relaxer facilement ou
prendre la voiture et faire un tour.
C’est très relaxant de vivre à Los Angeles. Et le climat est en général très bon.
Alors voilà, c’est un autre type de journées que j’ai. Tout dépend de ce que je dois
faire. Mais j’apprécie chaque chose. Je n’ai aucun problème comme « Oh mon
Dieu, je dois faire cela ». Non, cela n’entre pas dans ma tête, vous savez.
Il y a toujours une bonne raison pour faire ce qu’on doit faire, notamment de
lancer l’album, pour que tout le monde sâche qu’il est sorti, enfin presque tout le
monde... Et c’est une opportunité pour faire de nouvelles choses sur scène, vous
voyez, comme de mettre les 5 nouvelles chansons de l’album dans le spectacle. Et
cela marche vraiment bien, et avec le temps, on pourra peut-être ajouter tout
l’album dans le spectacle…
5. Je voudrais savoir si vous connaissez bien la France, si vous avez déjà visité
des régions du pays… si vous aimez certaines régions ?
5. Well. Paris, I’ve always enjoyed to come to Paris. I love the South of France as
well. You know Monte Carlo is very nice. There’s different parts of France I think
that’s great. It can be chilly and raining in Paris and then you go to Monte Carlo
and the sun could be shining .So it all happens in one country which is interesting.
But the thing for me that sets it more apart, first of all, it’s the architecture that I
love in Paris. The buildings look great and then I love French wine even when I’m
not in France, you know. I still prefer French wine to other wines from other parts
of the world. French cognac, French champagne and french food. So we’re looking
for french restaurants when we are in other parts of the world. and the
drinking….
5. Et bien, cela me fait toujours plaisir de venir à Paris. J’adore le Sud de la
France, j’aime aussi beaucoup Monte Carlo. En général, j’apprécie toutes les
régions de France. Il peut faire froid et pleuvoir à Paris, vous allez à Monte Carlo
et le soleil brille. Toutes ces différences sont très attractives. Mais ce qui me plait
avant tout est l’architecture de Paris, je trouve ses bâtiments vraiment beau. Et
j’adore le vin français, c’est celui que je préfère même quand je ne suis pas en
France. Il y a aussi le cognac français, le champagne français, et la nourriture
française ! Je cherche les restaurants français lorsque je suis ailleurs dans le
monde, et aussi ses boissons…
6. Tout au long de votre carrière vous avez eu beaucoup de chansons « hit » et
numéro un dans les charts, on ne peut pas toutes les nommer…
laquelle est votre préférée ?
6. Well, the most important one is “ it’s not unusual” because that’s changed my
life. That took me from singing in pubs and clubs and things and got me on
television. And all of a sudden I was all over the world, you know, mostly in
America. I went to America just a month or two after they put the record out. So
that’s always the one that’s closest to my heart because it did so much for me.
But then there’s other ones who came later, thank God. There’s a song that I did
called “ it looks like I’m never gonna fall in love again” which I think is a great
ballad. So I’ve been lucky to have had some really interesting songs. And always
good to sing live on stage. Some people say:” Are you ever fed up of singing
songs?” because some entertainers will record songs and they maybe they don’t
really like them. They have to go and perform and well, I don’t have that problem,
you know. To sing “ Delilah” for me is a test in itself , to be able to do it. You can’t
do that half- hearted. You’ve got to really get into it . And so those songs are still
exciting for me. And I love the response from the audience because they’re so
recognisable, you know. When “Delilah” starts off people know what’s coming so
they’re clapping before I open my mouth which is ( laughs) a good thing, is a good
thing that people know those songs.
6. La plus importante pour moi c’est « It’s not unusual » parce qu’elle a changé ma
vie. Avec cette chanson je suis passé des bistrots, clubs et autres, à la télévision.
Et tout à coup j’étais présent dans le monde entier, et surtout en Amérique. Je
me suis rendu en Amérique juste un ou deux mois après que la chanson soit
passée sur les ondes. Alors c’est pour cela que celle-là est précieuse parce qu’elle
a tant fait pour moi. Mais bien sûr il y en a eu d’autres qui sont venues plus tard,
Dieu Merci.
Il y a une chanson que j’ai faite qui s’appelait « It looks like I’m never gonna fall in
love again ». Et je pense que c’est une belle ballade. Et j’ai eu de la chance d’avoir
eu quelques chansons intéressantes, toujours agréables à chanter en live sur
scène.
Il y a des gens qui me disent : « Vous n’êtes pas fatigué de chanter des chansons
? » parce que certains artistes enregistrent des chansons et, peut-être, ils ne les
aiment pas vraiment. Ils doivent les chanter, et bien, je n’ai pas ce problème, vous
savez...
Pour moi, c’est un test de pouvoir chanter « Delilah ». Vous ne pouvez pas le faire
à moitié. Vous devez y aller à fond. Et c’est pour cela que ces chansons me font
plaisir. Et j’aime la réaction du public parce qu’elles sont reconnaissables, vous
savez. Quand « Delilah » commence, les gens savent ce qui va venir. Ils
applaudissent même avant que je n’ouvre la bouche, C’est un ce qui est une
superbe chose. C’est très bon signe que les gens connaissent ces chansons.
7. Vous êtes aussi le parrain de la nouvelle génération de tous ces artistes
“souls” anglais tel que Amy Winehouse, Duffy... Qu’est-ce que vous en pensez ?
Est-ce que vous les écoutez ?
7. Well, I’ve been wanting to do this CD for a long time with the same essence
that I had in the sixties. The same, errr, a lot of the arangements, you know, with
the brass, full blown arrangements. So when I suggested it , errr, record
companies said “ no it doesn’t work anymore, you know, that’s doesn’t work”. So
when Amy Winehouse’” back to black’ came out it confirmed to me that it can be
done. So all you’ve got to do is, no all you’ve got to do, it’s not that simple. But you
need to get a new sound. That’s what all it is. The sound is different to what it was
in the sixties but the arrangements are very similar you know. It’s back to songs
again. You know the songs that Amy Winehouse wrote and recorded are really,
really good songs, you know. And then Duffy comes along, you know and does her
thing. And that’ sounds little retro as well but still in a modern way. But the idea of
retro, you know, the structure of the songs, if you like which I think is great. And
it’s always good to come out with stuff like that because you don’t want the music
to get much of a muchness. Sometimes things tend to sound very similar . So I
think that’s the reason why these albums, you know the Amy Winehouse and
,Duffy and myself and few other people. It’s sort of a flashback but done in a
modern way which I think peole like. It’s refreshing.
7. Ca faisait très longtemps que j’avais envie de faire ce disque dans le même
esprit que ce que que nous faisions dans les années soixante, avec les mêmes
arrangements, vous savez, avec les cuivres et l’arrangement complet ! Quand je
l’ai suggéré, à ma maison de disques elle a dit : « non cela ne marche plus, non
cela ne va pas ». Soudainement Amy Winehouse a sorti « Back to Black » j’ai vu
que cela pouvait se faire !! Garder les même arrangements mais avec un son plus
moderne, un son d’aujourd’hui, c’est tout. mais les Le son était différent par
rapport aux années 60 mais les arrangements sont très similaires, vous savez.
C’est le retour de la chanson. Les chansons que Amy Winehouse a écrites et
enregistrées sont vraiment, vraiment très bien. Et puis Duffy est arrivée, cela
ressemble un peu à du rétro mais avec un nouveau son. L’idée du rétro, vous
savez, la structure des chansons, si vous préférez… je trouve que c’est bien,
c’est ce qu’il faut faire si vous ne voulez pas que la musique devienne trop
répétitive. Aujourd’hui les musiques se ressemblent un peu trop. C’est pourquoi
avec les albums comme ceux d’Amy Winehouse, de Duffy, le miens, et celui de
quelques autres personnes, c’est une sorte de retour en arrière, mais arrangé au
goût du jour… et le public suit, ça c’est nouveau !
8. Ma dernière question. Apres toutes ces années, vous lancez ce nouvel
album, comment vous sentez-vous ? Etes-vous angoissé ou excité ?
8. Well, the new album to me is exciting. It was, and it was interesting to go in
the studio with different songwriters and create new songs for some tracks for
the future, The two fellows that produce the album, they laid tracks down and we
laid a lot of the songs to the tracks. It’s really interesting to find out how these
things are going to turn out. And that’s one part of the process. And then you go
and promote it, you know, which is great. And then of course getting the songs on
stage. So I think all roads lead really to the stage at the end but it’s exciting for
me. I like to try new things, I like to try them out on stage.
8. Et bien, ce nouvel album me fait très plaisir. C’était très intéressant d’aller en
studio avec différents auteurs, compositeurs et de créer de nouvelles chansons,
d’ailleurs les 2 personnes qui produisent l’album en ont crée beaucoup. C’est très
intéressant de voir les titres se construire petit à petit. Après cette étape du
processus vous entrez en promotion, et après, bien sûr, vous jouez vos chansons
sur scène. Je pense que quoi qu’il arrive la finalité de tout cela est la scène, et ça
me plait vraiment ! J’aime tester de nouvelles choses, j’aime les tester sur scène.
